What NCEA level is most important? ›

This teaches them skills they will apply for job applications and gives them a chance for free money. NCEA level 2 is the most important year to get good grades. Applying for university occurs half way through students' last year of high school.

You can start working towards NCEA Level 2 before you gain NCEA Level 1. You need to gain a total of 80 credits to achieve your NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3.

To gain a Level 1 qualification you need to achieve at least 80 credits, including 10 numeracy credits and 10 literacy credits. To gain a Level 2 qualification you need to achieve 80 credits, 60 of those credits must be at Level 2 or higher – if you achieved Level 1, you may reuse 20 credits.

NCEA (Level 3) will be awarded to people have met the literacy and numeracy requirements and who are credited with a minimum of 80 credits at Level 2 or above, of which a minimum of 60 credits is at Level 3 or above, from achievement standards and/or unit standards.

Qualifications and their levels

Level 1 qualifications are the easiest to gain, Level 10 qualifications (Doctorates) are the hardest. The National Certificate of Education Achievement (NCEA) is the main national qualification for New Zealand's secondary students.

In the United States of America, if you go all the way through high school ("12th Grade") you probably have the equivalent of Level 3.

NCEA Level III has been equated with Grade 12, Level II with Grade 11 and Level I with Grade 10 of an Indian Board.

Level 1 English is a government accredited English course equivalent to GCSE English grade GCSE 'pass' grade 1 to 3 (grade D-G).

Paper 1: English Language 1 - Language, the Individual & Society (2 Hours 30 Minutes) is 100 marks in total (40% of A-level). Paper 2: English Language 2 - Language Diversity & Change (2 Hours 30 Minutes) is 100 marks in total (40% of A-level).

So, we can say that NCEA level 1 is roughly equivalent to the GCSE and NCEA level 3 corresponds to A-levels. In both systems, several subjects need to be chosen and the student can specialise more in a given area, such as science or language, as they advance from one level to another.

First-Year students have less than 28 credit hours. Sophomores have at least 28 credit hours but less than 60. Juniors have at least 60 credit hours but less than 90. Seniors have 90 credit hours or more.

Although Level 3 is a step up from the previous two levels, I would say that it is a fair increase in difficulty. It uses a lot of the knowledge gained from previous years of study and provides a more comprehensive framework for exploring different subjects.

Certificate Endorsement

There are two grades of endorsement: NCEA with Excellence – a completed NCEA qualification that includes 50 credits at Excellence level. NCEA with Merit – a completed NCEA qualification that includes 50 credits at Merit or better (this can be a mix of Merit and Excellence).

Your Level 2 results are important, as these are often used as part of the selection process by universities, polytechnics and employers. You may need to take particular Level 3 standards as an entry requirement for some tertiary courses.

Level 8 postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas and Bachelor's Honours degrees. Level 9 Master's degrees. Level 10 doctoral degrees.
